Bali has a strong surfing culture and is one of the most well-known place to surf in the world.
It’s the perfect place for surfing with the Bali warm water and the relatively uncrowded breaks.
Bali is a popular surfing destination and hosts regularly international surfing competitions gathering surfers from around the world.
However, the unique geography and variety of coastlines of the island offer also perfect conditions for wave’s riding beginners. The best waves are in Uluwatu, Padang Padang and Balangan.
I haven’t done any surf in my life… Living in Bali now, I have to manage to stand on a board!
There are lots of surfing schools on Kuta beach and it makes sense: it is an excellent spot to start the adventure, the waves are just perfect to learn how to surf. Luckily I found a nice school with a friendly staff, the place was also really pleasant with a restaurant and a pool.
A good thing with this school is that we started from the basics, which is important for me to get confidence.
First step, you have to put on a wetsuit. Not the most flattering item of clothing a girl could be wearing!
We were then split in two groups of 5 persons with 2 trainers: board’s size, how to paddle, legs’ position, hands, head…With a bit more familiarizes with the theory, direction the pool.
We made tours with our boards, learning how to make half a tour with the boards, to change the direction and to stand on it in the water. The coaches were funny and very very very patient.
Trust me: it looks easy, but there is a reason why the surfers are so fit!
Last step: the beach. Excited to make as all the people whom I saw surfing, I fast became disenchanted. It is at this moment there that the serious things begin.
Nyoman Star, my coach was very rewarding. As soon as she judged the wave was accessible, she pushed me, I paddled hard and tried to get up. She was always there to motivate me.
And yes, I am using the word “try” because exercising on a dry land is a thing, redoing the same thing in the water is another one. Because guess what? Water moves!
I spend a majority of my lesson falling off the board…but I finally managed to stand up on some waves! What a great feeling!
I finished exhausted but I really wanted to go back there again and to have this satisfaction feeling and absolute vacuum!
I recommend this school, program is fun, structured, professional and safe. Great settings, atmosphere and smiles make all the difference! Experience how it feels to break away and slide down off a wave… with the support of a great bunch of friendly coaches.
