Since spending a lot of time in Bali I became addicted to body-boarding, which in my opinion is an easy way of having fun in the waves, as compared to surfing. Before arriving in Phuket, I knew it was famous for diving but I was not expecting any surfing spots.
Luckily for me, after a few days I discovered Kata Beach, ‘The place’ to surf in Phuket !
Kata Beach is a lovely beach on the South West coast of Phuket. With its white sand, its palm trees and its turquoise water, you cannot help but fall under its charm and really feel like you are on holidays.
But the main reason I like Kata beach so much are its great curly and punchy waves. The beach is getting more and more famous, and is becoming the capital of surf of Phuket. You can rent surfing & body boards on the beach for a few dollars.
For your information, there is a beach break on the south-end of the beach : this is where most of the experienced surfers are.
If you are in Phuket and you want to learn how to surf, Kata beach is the place to be. You can book surf lessons here if you are looking for professional instructors. They teach surfing to any people of all ages, and they insure that everybody gets up on their very first surfing lesson. There surfing instructors are from varied places such as New Zealand, France, Russia, Scotland and of course Thailand. They are all experienced, qualified, very knowledgeable about ocean, current and wave dynamics, and overall very friendly!
Since recently beginners can learn the basics of surfing on an artificial wave: how to stand, balance and move the board on a layer of water up and over a surface designed to replicate the shape of an ocean wave.
Enjoy Kata and surf up !
