You cannot say that you have been to Bali if you haven’t gone to Jimbaran Bay for the seafoods! Jimbaran is located in the South of Bali, in between Kuta and the Bukit. It is around 15 minutes drive from the airport & 20 minutes from Seminyak when there’s not much traffic.

Most people come to the bay for the delectable seafood restaurants. There are about 15 restaurants stretched along the shore of Jimbaran in the Muaya Cafe Area. Menega Café is one of the famous ones, but all these restaurants are using the same method in cooking their seafoods: coconut husks! Yes, this is the secret to their mouthwatering dishes. They are grilling their seafoods, marinated and seasoned with the island’s traditional spices, over burning coconut husks. The smoke from the husks flavor the seafoods pleasantly!

When you get into the restaurant, first thing you’ll see is people lining up to pick and order their seafoods. From various kind of fishes, clams, squids, crabs, shrimps, to prawns and lobsters; recently caught in the ice boxes, or the live ones in the aquariums.

The line-up was already quite long when we got there before 6pm on a weekday. We think it’s best when you come here around 4pm or before 5pm, so you can get the best table closer to the water and enjoy the view while waiting for your food. You can also call and reserve your table in advance, or come during lunch when it’s less crowded (but you will miss the gorgeous sunset at 6pm!).

Looking at the crowds, it’s hard to believe that this area was bombed 9 years ago in October 2005. Menega Café was one of the three places that was bombed on that day. This place is always crowded, thus why it was an easy target. Nevertheless, the food is delightful, sunset is magical, tables are on the sand, what more can you ask for a lovely evening? We had 3 kilos of clams, 2 kilos of squids, 1 kilo prawns and a few hundred grams of fresh fish. We ate like a king but it only cost us less than 600,000 rupiah! Groovy!

A little to the west we saw a part of the beach with no restaurant, people are playing with the water, surfing and even just hanging out while the sun is setting. It was a pleasant view. Jimbaran is indeed a wonderful place to eat, spend time and hang out with loved ones!
